Raising awareness about house martins is a vital mission within our charity; the more people learn about them, and the more people understand about their lives and needs, the more we can engage people to help in their conservation.
We want people from all backgrounds and of all ages to engage and learn about house martins, and we feel it is particularly important to generate curiosity and learning with children and young people, who we hope will be house martin champions of the future.
With this in mind, we have created a variety of fun educational materials that can help people to identify and learn about the lives of house martins.
We hope that for children and the younger generation the materials will be used within families, in schools, by youth clubs and youth groups, and that children will seek them out and use them for self-learning too.
To aid schools, youth clubs, youth groups, and families some resources have age ranges to make it easier to find suitable learning material, however we invite everyone of all ages to check them out, use them, and give them a go!
We hope you have fun learning about house martins, and that we can inspire people to find a place in their hearts for these charming birds.
This resource provides information about house martins and other migratory birds with similar behaviours that also return to the UK to breed each year; swallows, sand martins, and swifts. These bird species can be misidentified because of similarities between them. The identification sheet points out key features of their appearance and nesting places to help people to tell them apart and recognise them.
We have developed two short slide presentations and supporting notes documents that can be used for schools in assembly or class, or for youth clubs/groups, and within families as a learning source. One is targeted for primary school children, and the other for secondary school and further education students. Whilst age ranges have been added to assist usage, we invite everyone of all ages to check out this resource.
This resource provides questions, experiments, projects, and activities over a range of 7 subjects found in the school curriculum/classroom so that they can be used in everyday classroom learning, or as additional learning in group settings or at home. The subjects covered are English, mathematics, science, geography, history, art/photography, and physical education.
Each subject has material listed into four different age categories: ages 4-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14+ to make it easy and quick to find suitable learning tasks.
In addition, to enable topic-based learning, we have provided three topic identifiers: climate change, migration, and natural science. All the questions, experiments, and activities relate to at least one of these topics. The identifiers enable the appropriate material to be easily located for a topic-based learning approach, making it a versatile resource for use within schools, youth clubs, youth groups, or family activities.
Whilst age ranges have been added to assist usage, we invite everyone of all ages to check out this resource and give the questions, experiments, and projects a go!
A selection of additional on-line resources that can be used to enhance the educational experience, giving sensory depth and vivid detail to the characters and behaviours of house martins, and to encourage people to find out more about them.
The resources will also aid research for the classroom based learning materials.
